The 3500 system incorporates numerous self-monitoring features that identify faulty monitoring modules and the sensors to which they are connected, recognising and identifying problems by means of appropriate error codes and suppressing channel operation when faults may jeopardise the correct operation of the system.

The 3500 system stores configuration settings in two separate locations in each module's non-volatile memory. This redundancy allows each module to compare configuration information for agreement and flag any anomalies. Using redundant non-volatile memory also allows the spare module to be programmed in advance. It also ensures that the monitoring configuration is not lost when the power supply is interrupted without the use of redundant power supplies.

Ranging from single modules to dual power supplies to redundant relay modules with extensive and flexible logic operation options, complex relay logic can be configured as required.The 3500 system is also available with various Safety Integrity Levels (SIL1 and SIL 2) approvals for a wide range of 3500 monitors for use in Safety Instrumented Systems, subject to Functional Safety approvals.
